25 for 25 Winners

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Peace Library System (PLS) held a contest called "25 for 25: The Best Books of Our Time" to determine the 25 best books published over the last 25 years as selected by residents of northwestern Alberta.

The  contest, which ran from September 21 to October 21, 2011 to coincide with Canadian Library Month, asked members of the public to select their favourite books from lists prepared by Peace Library System. These lists were based on suggestions provided by Peace Region public and school libraries, members of the public both young and old, and from circulation statistics and bestseller lists.

Two lists of books were compiled and provided, with each consisting of 100 titles, all published in or after 1986 (the year Peace Library System was established). One list was comprised of children’s and young adult books, while the other contained adult titles. Both fiction and non-fiction were included, as were entire series (such as Harry Potter). If a favourite book was not on the list, space was provided for it to be added.

Voters were asked to select or add as many titles as they wished from either list.

The 25 titles with the most votes have been declared the winners.

Voters who provided their name and phone number were entered in a draw to win the grand prize of a Kobo Touch eReader, or one three $50.00 gift certificates to Coles/Chapters/Indigo.

The winner of the Kobo Touch is Kimberlee Laliberte of Spirit River.

The recipients of the gift certificates are:

  • Diane Haskell of Valleyview
  • Wade Reinders of Peace River
  • Karen Landers of Grande Prairie
